THE Advertising Standards Board has deemed a controversial advertisement for shoes too explicit for public display.
Although Windsor Smith insists the billboard, which features a scantily-clad female at eye level with a man's crotch, is suitable for the public, the ad has been removed from many of its sites.
Board executive director David Howard said that although the advertising industry was self-regulatory, steps had been taken to encourage Windsor Smith to remove the ad after widespread public complaint.
Windsor Smith national marketing manager Lisa Trendell said the ad had been removed by Australian Posters, the company that leases the billboard sites, before Windsor Smith was able to intervene.
She said the company had no regrets for launching its fourth controversial advertising campaign in two years.
Two of the billboards were erected in Maitland and Merewether.
